General Resources

National Center for PTSD
The National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was created within the Department of Veterans Affairs in 1989, in response to a Congressional mandate to address the needs of veterans with military-related PTSD. Its mission was, and remains: To advance the clinical care and social welfare of America's veterans through research, education, and training in the science, diagnosis, and treatment of PTSD and stress-related disorders. This website is provided as an educational resource concerning PTSD and other enduring consequences of traumatic stress. Several sections of the website are specific to disaster.

International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies
The International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) was founded in 1985 for professionals to share information about the effects of trauma. ISTSS is dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of knowledge about policy, program and service initiatives that seek to reduce traumatic stressors and their immediate and long-term consequences. ISTSS provides a forum for the sharing of research, clinical strategies, public policy concerns and theoretical formulations on trauma in the United States and around the world.

American Psychological Association
Based in Washington, DC, the American Psychological Association (APA) is a scientific and professional organization that represents psychology in the United States. With more than 150,000 members, APA is the largest association of psychologists worldwide.

American Red Cross
The mission of American Red Cross Disaster Services is to ensure nationwide disaster planning, preparedness, community disaster education, mitigation, and response that will provide the American people with quality services delivered in a uniform, consistent, and responsive manner. The American Red Cross responds to disasters such as hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, and fires, or other situations that cause human suffering or create human needs that those affected cannot alleviate without assistance. It is an independent, humanitarian, voluntary organization, not a government agency.

Disaster Psychiatry Outreach
Disaster Psychiatry Outreach is a non-profit volunteer organization of psychiatrists committed to providing high quality disaster mental health services. Their goals are: serving as a disaster mental health team providing on-site psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacologic services, developing and implementing educational programs and referral mechanisms, and contributing to future research and policy in the field of disaster psychiatry.

World Health Organization
The World Health Organization (WHO) is the United Nations specialized agency for health. Established in 1948, WHO's objective is the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health. Health is defined as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies
The European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ESTSS), established in 1993, is the European network for professionals in the field of psychotraumatology. ESTSS seeks to ensure continued prominence is given to all aspects of traumatic stress and its many repercussions and promotes networking between individuals and organisations within the field of psychotraumatology.

Pan America Health Organization
The Pan American Health Organization has 35 Member Governments in the Western Hemisphere. It also serves as the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization. To improve the health and wellbeing of the entire population of the Americas, PAHO/WHO works through the Ministries of Health, and in the area of disaster reduction, with the health sector disaster programs in these Ministries. The health sector encompasses a broad group of actors including social security systems, the Red Cross, private medical services, NGOs and others, who are also included in technical cooperation activities.

National Hazards Center
Since 1976, the Natural Hazards Research and Applications Information Center (NHRAIC) has served as a national and international clearinghouse of knowledge concerning the social science and policy aspects of disasters. The Center collects and shares research and experience related to preparedness for, response to, recovery from, and mitigation of disasters, emphasizing the link between hazard mitigation and sustainability to both producers and users of research and knowledge on extreme events. A basic goal of the Center is to strengthen communication among researchers and the individuals, organizations, and agencies concerned with reducing damages caused by disasters.
